Intoxicated man lets drunk 16-year-old have his keys and allows her to drive

22-year-old Felipe Carmelo-Peres was charged with driving under the influence by consent after he gave an intoxicated 16- year-old female, without a driver’s license, permission to drive.

On November 7th, Wilson County Sheriff Corporal Scott Howard investigated a complaint from a concerned citizen regarding a possible impaired driver on Posey Hill Road. Corporal Howard witnessed a vehicle pulling from a private driveway matching the description of the vehicle stated in the complaint. The officer’s report stated that as he followed and observed, the driver of the vehicle crossed both the center line and the fog line several times and was unable to maintain the lane of travel. Corporal Howard initiated emergency equipment and stopped the vehicle at 1250 Posey Hill Road. The officer’s report stated that a female was driving the vehicle. Corporal Howard noted the female had slurred speech, red, watery eyes, and a strong odor commonly associated with alcoholic beverages on her breath and person. As the female stepped from the car, she was unsteady on her feet.

After the driver was detained, officers spoke with Felipe Perez Carmelo who had slurred speech, red, watery eyes, and a strong odor commonly associated with alcoholic beverages about his breath and person. Carmelo was unsteady on his feet when exiting the vehicle. During the investigation, Corporal Howard reported that through a translator, the female stated her date of birth was 11/28/2000, making her 19-years- old, but after investigation, the female’s date of birth was found to be 11/28/2003, making her 16-years-old. The minor was transported and charged with underage driving under the influence and no driver’s license in juvenile court. According to the officer’s report, a large number of beer bottles and cans, both varieties empty and open, were found inside the vehicle.

Felipe Perez Carmelo was arrested and charged with driving under the influence by consent, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Carmelo is being held in Wilson County jail in lieu of a $16,000 bond.
