Teen charged with firearm & marijuana after speeding in school zone — Joshua Pickney

19-year-old Joshua Wilson Pickney was pulled over for speeding in Chevrolet Impala through a school zone. Cpl Sean Ronan, of MJPD, says he smelled weed and noticed a rolling tray with shake in the back seat, which gave him probable cause to search the car, despite the very vocal opposition of Pickney. Inside the car, Ronan located four bags of marijuana, a scale, and a TP9 handgun. Pickney is free on a $16,000 bond.

ARREST WARRANT / AFFIDAVIT:
On 08/13/2021 I, Corporal Ronan, stopped an older model Chevrolet Impala for speeding within the school zone of Wright Elementary. After making contact with the driver, Joshua Pickney I noted the very strong odor of Cannabis (Marijuana) coming from the passenger area of the vehicle. I also observed a plastic plate in the back seat with brown crushed tobacco intermingled with fresh green plant-like material believed to be Cannabis a Schedule VI substance.

I asked the driver to exit the vehicle and informed him of my observations and that I would be conducting a probable cause search of the vehicle. Pickney began yelling I couldn’t search the vehicle and I again attempted to explain why I could. Pickney refused to listen and continued to distract me from the search. Pickney was detained at that time and placed in the rear of B19 (Gibbs) vehicle.

During the course of the vehicle search I located (4) four separate baggies containing a crushed green plant-like substance suspect Cannabis/Marijuana (Schedule VI) in the center compartment of the lower dashboard as well as a digital scale. I also located a black magazine containing (13) thirteen live rounds of PMC 9mm Luger ammunition and a black box with Vuse.com on the lid with the remnants of Cannabis still in the box from the driver’s side door panel.

I located a Canik TP9 9mm semi-automatic handgun, ser# —- with a tactical light/ laser light combination attached and a (30) thirty-round extended magazine in the weapon. The weapon was empty, however, the loaded magazine was readily accessible in the driver’s side door. Pickney was advised of his Constitutional rights per Miranda at approximately 1505 hours at which time he refused to answer questions and invoked his right to counsel.

While conducting the custodial search I located razor type tool used to cut cigarillos open in order to replace the tobacco with the Cannabis. These events occurred in Wilson County, Mt Juliet, TN.
