Watertown man racks up seven charges after smashing mall sign, fleeing on flat tire

19-year-old James Sanders was charged with DUI, vandalism, failure to report crash, implied consent violation, leaving scene with property damage, driving on suspended license, and tampering with evidence when authorities were alerted to someone inebriated and attempting to change a tire after destroying the Outlet Village Mall sign.

On February 16th, Officer William Nicholson was called to the mall located at 1 Outlet Village Boulevard to investigate a possibly intoxicated person changing a tire. By the time the unit arrived, the subjects had moved their location to a Pilot located at 921 Murfreesboro Road. Officer Nicholson examined the driver, James Sanders, for sobriety and Sanders could not complete the tasks.

The officer also noted the scent of alcohol, red watery eyes, instability in movement, and recovered an empty bottle of 99 Watermelons from the car. Sanders had hit and damaged the Outlet Village sign valued at $3,000 and left the scene on a flat tire. James sanders refused a blood test. Further research showed that Sanders’ license was suspended for Drug-Free Youth Act in September of 2016 and that he was charged with DUI in December of 2019.

James Sanders was arrested and charged with DUI, vandalism, failure to report crash, implied consent violation, leaving scene with property damage, driving on suspended license, and tampering with evidence. He was released on his own recognizance.
