Centerville man caught with stolen vehicle five days after initial theft

22-year-old Benjamin Bates was charged with theft of property after officers located a stolen vehicle at Academy Sports in Mt. Juliet. He was seen fleeing the scene shortly after but was apprehended at a nearby Walmart.

On June 23rd, Corporal Barth was dispatched to the intersection of Central Pike and Pleasant Grove Rd in regard to a reported stolen vehicle. According to the affidavit, the vehicle had been reported as stolen in Dickson County on June 18th. Upon arrival, the vehicle was located in the parking lot of Academy Sports located at 549 Pleasant Grove Rd. A woman was detained for questioning about the stolen vehicle. The woman provided a description of the male’s appearance and clothing. Barth observed the man fleeing the parking lot shortly after receiving the description, per report.

Officer Fulton additionally observed the male and successfully apprehended him in the Walmart parking lot located directly across the street. The male subject proceeded to identify himself as Benjamin Bates. Following Bates’ consent to questioning, the man confessed to unlawfully taking the vehicle on June 18th. The vehicle’s estimated value reportedly exceeded $10,000.

Benjamin Bates was arrested and charged with theft of property. His bond was set at $2,000.
