Mt. Juliet man found with bourbon during traffic accident stop, charged with DUI

56-year-old Nicholas Scalf was charged with driving under the influence after he was involved in a traffic accident involving injuries and admitted to police that he was drinking bourbon while driving.

On May 1st, MJPD Officer Scott Fulton responded to a vehicle crash with injuries at Lebanon Road and Benton Douglas Boulevard in Mt. Juliet. The officer spoke with the driver, identified as Nicholas Scalf, and noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his person. Nicholas also had red watery eyes and slurred speech, according to the affidavit.

Officer Fulton conducted several field sobriety tests, and noted that Nicholas showed clues of impairment. In his vehicle, a plastic cup was found that tipped over and had a small amount of liquid inside that smelled like bourbon. Nicholas admitted to police that he was drinking bourbon while driving and before.

Nicholas Scalf was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was later released on his own recognizance.
