Two men caught switching license plates leads to recovery of a stolen vehicle

20-year old Christopher Wanner and 28-year old Dewey Gregory were charged with theft of property and altering of auto tags after being observed by an officer removing tags on a vehicle at Thortons.

On September 6th, Wilson County Deputy James Whited was getting out of his patrol car at Thortons located at 243 Highway 109 North when he observed two male subjects identified as Christopher Wanner and Dewey Gregory removing a vehicle tag off of a maroon 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck.

The deputy ran the tag through NCIC and it came back as a stolen vehicle and tag. Deputy Whited stated the stolen tag was on a non-stolen vehicle. Wanner and Gregory had traded the actual reported stolen truck for a 1999 Chevrolet and placed the stolen tag on it. The stolen 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck was valued at $2,500 and was later recovered at 212 East Maple Street.

Christopher Wanner and Dewey Gregory were arrested and charged with theft of property and altering of temporary tags. Their bonds were set at $20,000 each.
